Groundsmiths is an independent consulting engineering practice based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Established in 2009, we work with private individuals, developers, builders, architects and other construction professionals involved in commercial, industrial and residential development across Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and the wider region.

Our work is centred around providing practical engineering solutions to ground-related issues that can affect the development of land, including historic mining legacy, contamination, ground gas and geotechnical constraints. Our services encompass site characterisation and land appraisal, geotechnical and geo-environmental ground investigation, risk assessment, remediation design and verification.

We maintain close working relationships with a network of experienced construction professionals and specialist contractors whose expertise can be drawn upon where required, including architects, planners, surveyors, structural and civil engineers, drilling contractors, piling contractors and specialist remediation contractors.

As an independent consultancy, we provide a direct and personal service throughout each commission, from initial advice and investigation through to reporting, remediation and regulatory approval. Our approach is to identify what is actually required for a site and provide proportionate, practical recommendations to allow development to proceed.
